Monfortino behind the scenes
I would like dedicate the anti-editorial of this issue to an extraordinary wine tasting proposed by Marco Manzoli, who wanted to commemorate, in his own unique way, the wine of Monfortino – starting off with a bottle from 1926 that was therefore 90 years old.
In 2080 a much lighter and sweeter wine.

Thanks to climate change the wines from le Langhe could lose their intense red color in the next 30 years and become more orange.

The secrets of the wines created by Donato Lanati in Monferrato
Within the ‘belly’ of Genesis lies the contents of an entire wine cellar. “It can hold up to 200 kilos of grapes and produce 100 liters of wine, ready to be perfected”, says Dora Marchi, biologist and enologist at Enosis, a sixteenth century farmhouse mansion set among vineyards where 37 Italian native grape varieties are cultivated: a true “Wonder”.

Donato Lanati The wine-whisperer
Donato Lanati has devoted a lifetime to wine
“I stood spellbound by those luminous blue grape clusters. I ran to my mother and announced that as a man I would study this fruit: I would become an enologist”.

Donato Lanati – enologist and scientist
Born in Lombardy, adopted by the Piedmontese, he displays a gentle but firm demeanor: one of the most sensitive, curious and courageous enologists in Italy. Donato Lanati has earned a reputation as an enologist-scientist thanks to his research work at Enosis, a center for applied research in enology and viticulture which he founded in 1990 in Cuccaro, Monferrato.

“What harvest? Here in Monferrato all that is left are peanuts!”
“What harvest? There is a harvest here in Monferrato? Look around you……the only thing I can see are peanuts!”. The vantage point from which we observe the surrounding landscape is no ordinary one, but rather the farmhouse mansion of ‘Enosis Meraviglia’, that just last July celebrated its first ten years of activity (although the project ‘Enosis' has been ongoing for 25 years) as a ‘university of wine’, par excellence, from the study of the grape to the tasting of wines in specially designed wine glasses, the better to savor each individual flavor and each aftertaste.

Lanati: this is how science will help us to make the wine of the future
When he was eight years old his parents took Donato on a trip around Monferrato and he found himself rambling among the vineyards. It was here that he discovered his passion, the grape: “That imaginative geometric form, an expression of the grandeur of nature and the ‘terroir’ – it was a moment of magic. There and then, I decided I wanted to work with that fruit”, recalls Donato Lanati today. (by Pierangelo Soldavini)

Chemistry and robotics of quality wine
The grape is, in itself, a laboratory to explore. For twenty years at the research and development center ‘Enosis', Donato Lanati has been delving into the secrets of the grape in his bid to harmonize the molecules….
The dream continues: a little peek at excellence.
Turning left on the road that leads from Fubine to Cuccaro, Monferrato, one is immediately faced with the spectacular sight that is the sixteenth-century farmhouse that is Enosis; the harmony of these vineyards, colors and architecture so beautiful as to take the breath away and where the enchanted air bewitches the senses.
